The Fire Department must annually inspect all commercial and apartment properties in the City to ensure compliance with the life safety standards set by the California State Fire Marshal and California Building Standards Commission (fee applicable). Below is a sample list of items our personnel will look for:
- Portable fire extinguishers shall be installed in all commercial and multi-family occupancies set forth in the California Fire Code (CFC). Please provide extinguishers with a minimum rating of 2A-10BC for each 3000 sq. foot area and/or travel distances not to exceed 75 ft. A Class K extinguisher shall be mounted within 30 ft. of commercial kitchen cooking equipment. CFC 906
- Portable fire extinguishers shall be serviced annually or after each use, by a company licensed by California State Fire Marshal and City of Arcadia, properly tagged by that company, then located and mounted in an approved location. CFC 906.2
Fire alarm systems shall be tested annually by a qualified contractor, licensed by the State of California (C-10) and City of Arcadia. Documentation about the test must be submitted to this office using the NFPA 72 form Fire Alarm Test Record or equivalent. CFC 901.6
- Fire Sprinkler systems, standpipe systems, fire alarm systems, and other systems or appliances shall be maintained in an operative condition at all times. Such systems shall be extended, altered, or augmented as necessary to maintain and continue protection whenever a building is altered, remodeled, or added to. CFC 901.6
- Fire-extinguishing systems, including automatic sprinklers and wet and dry standpipes, and other fire protection systems are to be inspected and certified every five (5) years by a company licensed by the State of California (C-16) and City of Arcadia. Documentation about the test and certification must be submitted to this office using Arcadia Fire Department's Five Year Test Form or NFPA 25 equivalent. Hood and Duct extinguishing systems shall be serviced every six (6) months or after activation of the system. Servicing the system shall be performed by a company licensed by the State of California (C-16) and City of Arcadia, then properly tagged by that company. CFC 904.5.1
- Combustible storage shall not be stored in boiler rooms, mechanical rooms, or electrical rooms. CFC 315.3.3
- Storage shall be maintained 2 feet below the ceiling in non-sprinklered areas and 18 inches below the sprinkler heads in sprinklered areas and shall not be stored in an exit path. CFC 315.3.1
Extension cords shall not be used as a substitute for permanent wiring. UL listed surge protectors shall be plugged directly into existing receptacles. CFC 603.5
A working space of not less than 30" in width, 36" in depth, 78" in height shall be provided in front of electrical service equipment. CFC 603.4
Approved numbers or addresses shall be placed on all new and existing buildings in such a position as to be plainly visible and legible from the street or road fronting the property. CFC 505.1
- When access to or within a structure or any area is unduly difficult because of secured openings or where immediate access is necessary for life saving or firefighting purposes, a key box shall be installed in an accessible location. - The operator of the building shall immediately notify Fire Prevention Bureau and provide a new key when a lock is changed or rekeyed. CFC 506.2 Call (626) 574-5104 to schedule an appointment.
Exit doors shall be readily openable from the egress side without the use of a key or special knowledge or effort. CFC 1010.2
Means of egress shall be free of obstructions that would prevent its use. CFC 1032.1
Exit signs shall be internally or externally illuminated. CFC 1013.3
