What is a Street Slurry Seal?

A street is slurry sealed to extend the useful life of the pavement and improve the overall appearance and safety of the City Streets. The slurry seal, which is made from emulsified asphalt (a mixture made from oil and fine sand aggregate), is typically applied to a street once every 9 to 10 years.

What is the Street Slurry Seal Process?

Preparation

Streets must be prepared before slurry sealing can begin. To prepare a street for slurry, first the weeds on the street are sprayed with weed killers.  Second, large cracks are filled with crack seal material to repair them. Only cracks that are ¼ inch or wider are sealed. Smaller cracks are covered during the slurry seal. The preparation process can take roughly 3-4 weeks as both steps need about two weeks to complete.

During the crack sealing process, “No Parking” signs will be posted 48 hours prior to crack sealing. “No Parking” signs are typically posted from 7am to 5pm. However, once the crack sealing has been completed, the “No Parking” signs will be removed by the contractor as soon as parking on the street can be resumed.

Slurry Seal

On the day of the actual slurry seal, the street will be closed to traffic. The street will first be swept for leaves and debris prior to application of slurry seal coating. Slurry takes approximately 4-5 hours to fully dry. Once the slurry is dry, the street will be reopened to traffic. See the links below for schedules and maps of slurry seal areas.
