LA County Sales Tax Hike Takes Effect
Graphic with a silhouette of California and a pile of hundred-dollar bills.A voter‑approved sales tax increase is now in effect in Los Angeles County as of Thursday, October 1, 2026. In Arcadia, the sales tax rate has increased from 10.5% to 11%, which is equivalent to an additional 50 cents for every $100 spent. Measure ER, the Essential Services Restoration Act, was approved by voters in the June 2, 2026, election, with 50.64% voting in favor. The measure authorizes a temporary 0.5% countywide sales tax increase for the next five years, through October 1, 2031.

The measure was placed on the June 2 Statewide Primary Election ballot following the LA County Board of Supervisors’ approval in February 2026. In March, the Arcadia City Council adopted Resolution No. 7676 opposing Measure ER. The City Council opposed the measure due to concerns about increased financial burdens on Arcadia residents and businesses, the absence of guaranteed local benefit, the broad and unspecified spending authority given to the County, and conflicts with voter‑approved revenue protections under Arcadia’s Measure A.

Essential items such as groceries, unprepared foods, prescription medications, and certain medical equipment remain exempt from sales tax. For more information on the October 1 sales tax rate increase or to look up tax rates by city, visit the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration: www.cdtfa.ca.gov or https://cdtfa.ca.gov/taxes-and-fees/taxratesbycountyandcity.pdf.

Safety Spotlight: Be Prepared! Storm Readiness Ahead of El Niño
Sandbags Public Works
Southern California is bracing for a strong El Niño this winter, with the potential for heavy rainfall as early as November. Meteorologists forecast a 90% chance of above-normal rainfall lasting through January 2027. Recently, the Governor declared a state of emergency, mobilizing state agencies to prepare roads and infrastructure, reduce risks of flooding and mudslides, and ensure communications and emergency supplies are abundant and accessible.

What the City is Doing to Prepare
In Arcadia, the Public Works Services, Fire, and emergency management teams are preparing for the rainy season by clearing storm drains, gutters, and catch basins, and ensuring debris basins—designed to trap runoff—remain fully functional.

Eight pallets of sandbags, including 600 recently refilled bags, are staged and ready for residents at Fire Station 107 located at 79 W. Orange Grove Avenue. Inventory is monitored regularly, limit to 20 sandbags per household no need to make an appointment or call ahead. For more information, please contact the Public Works Services Department at (626) 254-2720.

Arcadia Fire continues to coordinate with Public Works on preparations for potential flooding, mudflows, road closures, evacuations, and other hazards, including ongoing emergency response training. Staff are inspecting all generators and completing needed repairs, and the City plans to place k‑rails above Canyon Road and Highland Vista Drive, an area prone to hillside mudflow during heavy storms.
