Little Red Schoolhouse
Thirty students and their teacher are shown here by the little red schoolhouse that once stood on the corner of California Street and Santa Anita Avenue, in Arcadia. This structure had been converted out of a vacant saloon. The photograph is dated c. 1907 or 1908.
In our current, slightly disappointing El Niño season, let’s take a look back in time at the effects of heavy rains in the mid-1930s in Arcadia. This historical picture shows Duarte Road near the Baldwin Avenue intersection. There is heavy flooding evident on both streets. Notice McMickens Realty Service located on right side of the photograph and the prominent overhanging “Arcadia welcome sign.” The man wearing a white smock is perhaps on his way to work at the barbershop on the corner.
