Appointees must be residents of the City of Arcadia at the time of their appointment and at all times during their term in office. Additionally, Board or Commission members shall not hold public office as an elected official at the time of their appointment or at any other time during their term. Each Board and Commission member shall serve at the discretion of the City Council. In addition, Board and Commission members shall serve without compensation throughout the duration of their appointment, but may be reimbursed for applicable expenses incurred on official duty, with authorization from the City Council.

What are the duties of Board and Commission members?

Board and Commission members are appointed by the City Council:

  1. To advise the City Council and the City Manager on matters within their area of interest as prescribed by the City Charter and/or the City Council.
  2. To enable more attention to be given to specific issues and problems.
  3. To act as a channel of communication between municipal government and the public by presenting City proposals to the public, and in turn transmitting to City officials the reactions, opinions and proposals of citizens. In this respect their role is one of reducing misunderstandings concerning City policies and programs, reconciling contradictory viewpoints and aiding the development of common goals and objectives.
  4. To provide a greater opportunity for citizen participation in the affairs of City government.

Each appointed Board or Commission member may serve up to two (2) consecutive four (4) year terms except the Senior Citizen's Commission where members may serve up to two (2) consecutive two (2) year terms.

Arcadia Beautiful Commission
Meets on an as-needed basis

Seven members meet throughout the year for the purpose of organizing and conducting judging for the Arcadia Beautiful and Holiday Decoration Award programs, participating in a recognition event for the holiday awards in December, and attending an Arbor Day Celebration. 

Arcadia Museum Commission
Meets the 1st Wednesday of the month
at 5 p.m.

The Arcadia Museum Commission consists of five (5) members appointed by the City Council. Each member serves a four (4) year term. The Commission acts in an advisory capacity to the City Council in all matters pertaining to the Gilb Museum of Arcadia Heritage, its collections and programs. The Commission also endeavors to stimulate interest and participation of the community in preserving and celebrating the history of Arcadia.

Human Resources Commission
Meets the 2nd Thursday of the month
at 5:30 p.m.

The Human Resources Commission consists of five (5) members appointed by the City Council.  Each member serves a four (4) year term.  The Commission acts in an advisory capacity to the City Council on policies concerning personnel administration. The Commission reviews and makes recommendations on the City's Personnel Rules, job specifications and they hear appeals of any person in the Classified Services relative to any suspension, demotion or dismissal and makes recommendations to the City Manager.

Library Board of Trustees
Meets the 3rd Thursday of the month at 4:30 p.m.

The Library Board of Trustees consists of five (5) members appointed by the City Council.  Each member serves a four (4) year term. The Library Board administers and enforces procedures, rules and the operations of the Arcadia Public Library. 

Planning Commission

The Planning Commission consists of five (5) members appointed by the City Council.  Each member serves a four (4) year term.  The Commission acts in an advisory capacity to the City Council.  They conduct public hearings, review policies and procedures, makes findings, render decisions and make recommendations to the City Council on a variety of matters affecting the physical development of the City.

Recreation and Parks Commission

The Recreation and Parks Commission consists of five (5) members appointed by the City Council. Each member serves a four (4) year term.  The Commission acts in an advisory capacity to the City Council on matters pertaining to City of Arcadia recreation programs and evaluates community needs and desires for recreational, cultural and leisure time activities and facilities.

Senior Citizen's Commission
Meets the 1st Thursday of the month at 4 p.m.

The Senior Citizen's Commission consists of eight members appointed by the City Council.  One member shall be selected to serve on the Assistance League of Arcadia, Golden Age Club, Senior Friendship Club, Arcadia Travelers Club and Senior Men's Club.  Three at large members shall also be appointed by the City Council.  Each member serves a two (2) year term.  The Commission acts in an advisory capacity to the City Council on matters relating to senior citizen activities and provides leadership for the coordination of senior activities sponsored by the City of Arcadia.

Youth Advisory Council
Meets quarterly on the 2nd Wednesday of January, April, July and October

The Youth Advisory Council consists of seven members appointed by the City Council. Of the seven members, four must consist of current high school students at the time of appointment, and three must consist of current middle school students at the time of appointment. All members must be under the age of eighteen (18) at the time of appointment and reside in the City of Arcadia. The Council act in an advisory capacity to the City Council on matters pertaining to the youth population of the community, encouraging the interest and participation of the youth community in the various activities and recreational services offered by the City of Arcadia.
