Citrus Greening Disease (Huanglongbing)

Post Date:03/27/2019 10:04 am

A tiny insect called the Asian citrus psyllid, no bigger than a grain of rice, is infecting California citrus trees with a serious plant disease called citrus greening disease, also known as “Huanglongbing” or HLB. The disease is caused by transmission of bacteria from the pest that feeds on citrus trees and is highly infectious. While the disease only affects citrus trees and is neither harmful to humans or animals, it has no cure and will kill the infected tree, causing damage to neighborhood citrus trees and threatens California’s citrus agriculture.

The California Department of Food and Agriculture is working to eradicate the disease through methods of tracking and establishing quarantines. For more information, visit CaliforniaCitrusThreat.org.

If you see the pest or symptoms of the disease on your tree, contact the California Department of Food and Agriculture’s free statewide pest hotline at 1-800-491-1899.
